10 Tips for Successful Grocery Shopping in Grenada
Grocery shopping in Grenada can be a challenge for newcomers, especially cruisers with limited transportation options.
When we first arrived, I was full of questions: Are grocery stores accessible from the anchorages? What to buy in Grenada that is affordable? And, where can I find fresh, affordable produce?
After five months exploring the popular anchorages and grocery spots near these anchorages, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. This guide covers the 10 essential tips that every cruiser (and budget-conscious traveler) needs to make grocery shopping in Grenada easier and more affordable.
So grab your grocery bags and check out these tips for making grocery shopping much easier and help you find the groceries you are looking for.
1. Buy Fresh Produce in Grenada
If you are budget-conscious like we are, knowing where to buy fresh, local produce in Grenada will help you save big on groceries. And you get to try new, local foods!
For the best fresh groceries in Grenada, check out these places to buy local produce:
- Streetside Vendors: There are several individuals who will set up a table and sell their local produce that is in season like mangos, limes, starfruit, and sugar apples. Prices are around $5 XCD ($1.85 USD) for a bag.
- Jenny’s Organic Farmers Market: Jenny has fresh produce from her garden, and other vendors join her for a small farmer’s market. Find a great selection of high-quality meats, and sweet treats alongside fresh produce.
- Clarke’s Court Boatyard & Marina on Wednesdays (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
- Secret Harbor on Thursdays (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
- Port Louis Marina on Saturdays (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
- St. George’s Market: This is a large market in downtown St. Georges where you can find all of your local fruits, vegetables and spices for sale.
- St. George’s Fish Market: Just down the road from the St. George’s Market is the fish market. They sell freshly caught fish for very reasonable prices!

2. Shop at a Variety of Stores
We have found that we often need to go to several different stores to find everything we are looking for. What is in stock at each of the stores varies from day to day.
- Don’t expect to find everything you are looking for all at one store. You may need to change up your meal planning to eat what they have in stock.
- There are several pharmacy stores located throughout the island. They will carry items such as vitamins, bandaids, headache medicine and more. They often have a better selection of these items compared to grocery stores.
- After bringing Mangaux to Grenada, we had to stock up on dog food. We have been able to find dog food at Ram’s, IGA, CK’s (not recommended due to warehouse beetles we found in food we bought there), and ACE hardware. We were not able to find the same food we were feeding him in the United States, but we did find comparable food.
3. Learn When the Ship Comes In
We learned early on that the ship generally comes into port on Fridays, which means that Saturday mornings are the best time to go grocery shopping.
Saturday mornings through Sunday mornings (in stores open on Sundays) offer the best variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and many other items in the major grocery stores.
4. Buy What You Can Find When You Can Find It
When items run out of stock, it doesn’t take long for it to be out of stock at all of the grocery stores. Also, it can be weeks before they get restocked.
For example, we have been looking for tortilla chips (any brand and style will do!) for over 3 weeks now.
There is also a frequent shortage of eggs on the island at the major grocery stores. We especially noticed this when the students at St. George’s University came back to the island.
There are a couple of local egg sellers we keep an eye out for, and we have been successful at finding eggs at Foodland, across the street from Port Louis Marina.
5. Adjust your Recipes
One thing we have become better at is making adjustments to our recipes, using things we can find in Grenada grocery stores.
These may seem like no-brainers, but for someone who isn’t a great cook, and sticks to tried and true recipes, I’ve learned how to adjust in the area.
For example, I have a couple of recipes that call for heavy cream or half and half. They do carry them in both IGA and Ram’s Supermarket, but they may not always be in stock. I’ve learned to substitute them for a can of condensed milk and it works great.
Another easy substitution is using either canned or frozen veggies in place of fresh veggies. We do this a lot with spinach and mushrooms. Either the stores tend to be out of stock on these items, or they can be very expensive to buy fresh.
6. Know Store Hours and Holidays
Unlike shopping in the United States, where grocery stores are open 7 days a week and for extended hours, shopping in Grenada, West Indies is a little different.
Some of the grocery stores are closed on Sundays, which means you need to plan accordingly if you plan to cook on Sundays or provision for your next sailing destination.
Several of the grocery stores are closed on Grenada’s major holidays, including during Carnival.
7. Bring Your Own Bags when Grocery Shopping in Grenada
This is becoming more and more common as we sail to all of the different islands in the Caribbean, and Grenada is no exception.
We really like our insulated bag for keeping our refrigerated and frozen items cold while getting back to the boat.
I also carry small fold up bags with me wherever I go, as nearly all stores, in addition to grocery stores, only provide bags for purchase.
Large collapsible freezer cooler bag, leak proof portable thermal bag with handles.
This bag works great to keep cold and frozen items from thawing out in the hot Grenada heat. Also works great for pizza takeout!

I throw these in my purse or dry bag and always have a bag for purchases.
8. Bring Cash – Just in Case
The good news is that you can likely pay with your credit card wherever you go. However, using a credit card requires the internet and power.
We’ve been shopping on a handful of occasions where the internet was down and the store couldn’t use their credit card machine to ring up your purchase.
I’ve also been in stores a couple of times where all of the power goes out in the store. Luckily for me, the last time this happened, I had just finished checking out!
9. Make Use of the Cruiser Shuttles and Grenada Buses
While spending hurricane season in Grenada, we quickly learned about the Cruiser Shuttles that will take you to various grocery stores in Grenada as well as hardware stores.
The Cruiser Shuttles have a schedule for picking you up from various anchorages on different days of the week, and charge only $15 XCD ($5.55 USD) round trip.
They also make sure to have room for all of your groceries, so you are not limited in how much you can buy.
I also used the bus often to go to IGA or Rams when we were at the Grenada Yacht Club. It cost $2.50 XCD ($0.92 USD) each way or $5 XCD ($1.85 USD) round trip.
The only challenge with the bus is that you are limited in how much you can bring back with you. I limited it to two bags – one at my feet and one on my lap.
Cruiser shuttles and buses are both great Grenada travel methods for getting around the island.

10. Grenada Online Shopping & Grocery Store Shuttle
If you are not near a bus stop, or don’t want to wait for the day the Cruiser Shuttle comes to your area, then try these services:
- Shop online at IGA for delivery
- Email your order in at CK’s for delivery
- Call Ram’s shuttle at +1 (473) 405-4614 and they can come pick you up
These are all great services if you are somewhere that is a challenge to get to the grocery store.
